LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Police in Michigan say a 22-year-old man is being held on suspicion of murder and felony fleeing and eluding after a firefighter standing in a roadway collecting money for charity was struck and killed by a pickup truck.

Police say they believe the act was intentional and a witness says she saw the pickup swerve from one lane to another. Police say there was some sort of traffic altercation and the pickup actually circled back toward the firefighter. The truck fled the scene and the driver eventually took off on foot but was caught.

Officials say Dennis Rodeman, a seven-year veteran of the Lansing Fire Department, died Wednesday night. Rodeman was married two months ago, and he and his wife were expecting their first child.

The suspect, who has not been named, could be formally charged on Thursday.
