PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Smart phones serve as our connection to the world and now they’re serving as a connection to our home when we’re away. There are several alerts and safety features easily downloadable on a smart phone that can keep us safe.

Phil Nickinson with the website androidcentral.com told KOIN 6 News it’s never been easier to run your home off your phone, including cameras, locks, thermostats and more.

“It can tell when I’m coming home, when I’m arriving home, or even when my kids come home in the middle of the day,” said Nickinson.

The programs can also alert people to danger.

“If Nest detected that my house was on fire it could turn the sprinklers on to try and protect neighborhood homes,” Nickinson said.

There are several carriers and creators of this technology, including Nest, Apple, Samsung, Honeywell and Canary. Many of the products are available at local home improvement stores and are easy to install. According to Nickinson, it is important to have a good internet connection or a product with it’s own backup system. If everything is connected right, it can be a life saver.

“If you’re on the other side of the house and it detects smoke it can very gradually or alarmingly, alert you in another part of the house, or alert you on your phone and that’s the big deal.”
