PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — You’ve heard of video on demand. Now you can get a medical specialist on demand by a phone call or your smart phone.

A partnership between Zoom+ (Zoom Plus) and OHSU will put specialists in touch with people very quickly.

“This is, as far as I know, the first on-demand, direct access specialty care in the country,” said cardiologist Dr. David Boston. “It’s a whole new way of taking care of patients with specialty care needs.”

Boston is medical director of the new Zoom+ on NE 6th and Broadway, and is one of the specialists patients can see almost immediately.

“The standard is to wait for weeks and months to even see a specialist, and that’s maybe after you’ve waited for a primary care physician appointment, waiting in a sterile waiting room and office,” he said. “This is totally different. No referral needed, on-demand access, often within the same week.”

Patients can see a cardiologist, specialists in ear-nose-throat, orthopedics, gastroenterology and podiatry.

By the end of the year, Dr. Boston said they will add dermatology and gynecological specialists.

“We’re also trying to make pricing very transparent, fair,” he said. “That’s another disappointment that people have struggled with that Zoom is eliminating.”

Zoom+, formerly known as Zoom Care, has been around for about 10 years. But Boston said this service takes it to the next level.

“Patients are going to love it.”
