PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The relatives of four Hillsboro family members who drowned at Henry Hagg Lake last year plan to sue Washington County over alleged negligence in the deaths.
The Oregonian reports that according to tort letters sent July 1, the surviving family members intend to seek damages for each victim.
Forty-two-year-old Jova Ixtacua-Castano, 25-year-old Gabriela Garcia-Ixtacua, 13-year-old Michael Garcia-Ixtacua and 3-year-old Jeremy Scholl all drowned on Aug. 25, 2014. Fisherman discovered Jeremy’s body floating near the Sain Creek picnic area, and the other bodies were recovered the next day.
The tort letters claim that the county had failed to warn visitors of dangerous underwater conditions.
Since the drownings, the county has increased its safety measures by installing warning signs and supplementing existing life jacket loaner stations.
