PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland man was arrested Saturday after he reportedly stole a car that was left running to keep the A/C on, police said.

Shortly before 5 p.m., officers were flagged down in the area of SE 130th Avenue and Stark Street on reports of a possible carjacking.

The victim told police he left his black 1995 Toyota 4Runner running and unoccupied to keep the air conditioning on to cool the car down, Portland Police Bureau said.

The suspect, 27-year-old San Saechao, got into the car and began driving off when the owner intervened. He tried to get the car back, but Saechao reportedly fought him off and drove away.

The car owner suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

Officers found the car 6 blocks away, but Saechao had left the scene, police said.

Witnesses gave police information that helped them identify Saechao. He was taken into custody at his home on the 12600 block of SE Salmon Court, according to police.

Saechao was booked into Multnomah County Jail on charges of third-degree robbery, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
