PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — There are 331,000 military veterans in Oregon and many of them have trouble finding work.
In 2014, 7.3% of veterans were unemployed. For non-veterans, employment was at 6.4%.
“A good portion of our veterans, they get out they have disabilities. That’s physical and emotional disabilities. So it makes it difficult to transition back into the community,” Tom Cousino, a veteran who served in Desert Storm, tells KOIN.
Cousino says when he returned from his service he had to reach out to a veterans service organization to find work.
“They helped me with education because I wasn’t able to seek employment because of my disability,” he said.
“Many veterans do need some assistance, whether it’s unemployment, getting their healthcare which is what we do, veterans benefits, with the veteran benefits administration, as well as housing. Many veterans do suffer with housing issues too,” Daniel Herrigstad with the VA Portland Healthcare System tells KOIN.
Monday’s event aims to provide assistance and better serve veterans.
