McMINNVILLE, Ore. (KOIN) — A Yamhill County deputy was seriously hurt when a Hyundai Sonata slammed head-on into his patrol car along Highway 18 near McMinnville Sunday morning.

Investigators said Randy Manns was headed east and driving the Hyundai around 7:15 a.m. when he drifted off the highway into a ditch. Manns, 46, overcorrected and then went across the center line and hit Deputy Dave Mills’ patrol car.

The Hyundai burst into flames. Another deputy and a passerby stopped and pulled Manns out. A third deputy and 2 more passersby put the fire out with fire extinguishers.

Manns, from Depoe Bay, was airlifted to Legacy Emanuel in Portland. Deputy Mills, 27, was rushed by ambulance to Salem Hospital. Both are said to be in serious condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
