Santiam River claims 56-year-old Salem resident

SALEM, Ore. (KOIN) — The body of a 56-year-old man was recovered from the Santiam River around 9 p.m. Sunday night, hours after he called for help just before he went under.

Ralph Macfawn of Salem was found not far from where he entered the river around 5:40 p.m., officials said. About 30 emergency personnel from 7 different departments rushed to the scene to help locate the swimmer, including 5 boat teams and divers.

His family was at the scene when his body was found, authorities said.
