PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Central Loop for the Portland Streetcar will close for about 6 weeks on Friday as the Broadway Bridge gets re-painted.

The electricity will be shut off while the bridge gets re-painted, prompting the temporary closure of that streetcar line.

The line will be shut from June 26 to August 15, and will be back working by the time the Tilikum Crossing bridge opens on September 12, 2015.About 4,500 people every weekday use the CL line.

Streetcar Executive Director Dan Bower said the line has to be temporarily halted while the bridge electricity is off. The painting has to be done in the summer, he said.

At one point, the planned project could have closed the CL line for a year. But the Portland Streetcar staff worked with the county to change that.

“They understand now the difference between closing us down for a year and a temporary closure like this where we can really work with customers and make sure everybody can get around,” Bower said. “This is an OK outcome for us.”

He added people attending the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival likely won’t be affected since most streetcar users would take the North-South line and be dropped off at SW 1st/Naito and Harrison.
