PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The candles aren’t blowing in the wind, but they may have gone up in smoke. Either way, the party has left the building.
May 24 is the birthday of Bob Dylan (74), Tommy Chong (77) and Priscilla Presley (70). Each in their own way has made an indelible impression on the collective culture.
Tommy Chong and his partner Cheech Marin put their hooks into the drug counterculture in the 1970s and parlayed the stoner mentality into a series of records and movies. Cheech moved on to a successful acting career, while Chong later served a short stint in prison over the sale of drug paraphernalia. He is now involved with Tommy Chong’s Smoke Swipe, a smoke odor eliminator.
Bob Dylan changed American popular music at least as often as his public persona changed. Just this past week, Dylan appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman. In his introduction, Letterman said he talked with his 11-year-old son and asked him what the two most important things to know in life are.
“Be nice to other people, and the greatest songwriter of modern times is Bob Dylan.”
Priscilla Presley burst into the American consciousness when she married Elvis Presley after they met when she attended high school in Weisbaden, West Germany. They divorced in 1973. Elvis died in 1977 and she became the co-executor of Presley Estate two years later. She showed her comedic talents in a series of films, including “The Naked Gun” series.
Other celebrities sharing this May 24 birthday include Gary Burghoff (MASH), Patti LaBelle, Rosanne Cash, Kristin Scott Thomas and John C. Reilly.
Even if it’s not your birthday, you can celebrate the gifts and talents these artists have given us all.
