DONALD, Ore. (KOIN) — A 2-year-old was unharmed after a high-speed chase ended with 2 young men from Washington arrested on multiple charges.
The child was unrestrained in the back of a gold Mercedes that was seen speeding along I-5 in northern Marion County around 7:20 p.m. Saturday, authorities said. An Oregon State Police trooper pulled the car over near milepost 278, but the driver sped off as the trooper walked up to the car.
The Mercedes topped 100 mph along northbound I-205, but then appeared to have a mechanical issue. Smoke appeared from the car and the driver got off at the Stafford Road exit. Once the car stopped, the driver ran away into some blackberry briars, authorities said.
OSP got help from 4 other police agencies in this case. A K-9 was called and found the man later identified at Kyler Wayne Lawrence of Kent, Washington. He was treated at a nearby hospital for injuries from the K-9 catching him.
Another man in the Mercedes, Devin Lee Hoffman from Tacoma, was arrested for endangering the welfare of a minor. The child was evaluated and returned to a family member.
Lawrence faces a felony for attempting to elude by vehicle, attempting to elude on foot, reckless driving, two counts of reckless endangerment and possession of meth.
The 21-year-old men are both being held in the Clackamas County Jail.
