PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A group of Portland State University architecture students are building the city’s first ‘parklet’ on Southwest 4th Avenue, between College and Hall Streets.

It is part of the City of Portland’s Street Seats program, which allows businesses and non-profits to convert on-street parking into other uses.

The mini-park is being built with sustainable and reclaimed materials in front of a food cart pod.  The goal is create a a public gathering place in the heart of the SoMa district.  Once complete, the area will feature tables, benches and bar stools with seating for more than 2 dozen people.

Construction will continue all weekend.  The parklet will be open for the public after June 1.
