PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A Milton-Freewater man will serve more than seven years in prison for trying to kill his ex-girlfriend in front of their 4-year-old daughter.

The East Oregonian reports that 22-year-old Ramon Jonathon Leon Gonzalez pleaded guilty Wednesday to burglary and attempted murder.

Gonzalez spoke via video from jail and used a Spanish language interpreter.

Prosecutors say Gonzalez broke into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in January, where he stabbed her twice in the side and slashed at her throat while their daughter looked on.

His ex-girlfriend was left with a scar beneath her chin from a wound that her attorney says could have ended her life.

She cried Wednesday and told the court that Gonzalez is a frightening figure to their daughter.

Gonzalez’ attorney says he may face deportation to Mexico.
