Volleyball players crowdfund for expensive seasons

Local girls discuss obligations of high-cost sports

OREGON (KOIN 6) — Eighth grader Nico Wilbur and high school sophomore Calla Meyer will tell you, volleyball’s not a cheap sport. But despite the big financial obligation, it’s their passion for the sport that keeps them going.

Meyer said, her yearly costs are about $6,500 — and that doesn’t include travel costs for her parents. It’s rare that both her mom and dad get to see her play while on the road.

Both girls have used donation sites like GoFundMe to pay for their expensive volleyball seasons.

Stan Brock talked to them about their dedication to the sport and their big plans for the future.
