PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A man is in custody after he allegedly tried to kidnap a child in Northwest Portland Wednesday evening, officials said.

Matthew Lee Edwards, 23, was booked in Multnomah County Jail on first degree attempted kidnapping charges, Portland Police Bureau said.

Police were called to Northwest 23rd and Lovejoy around 4:15 p.m. when three adults were seen arguing and a child was crying.

After speaking with witnesses and the child’s mother, detectives learned the 2-year-old was walking with his mom when Edwards walked up to them, pushed the mother to the ground and tried to grab the child. He claimed the child belonged to a family member.

Several people in the area stopped to help the mother and child while forcing the suspect away from them. Edwards initially fled the scene but was later located by officers in the area.

The child was not hurt.

Edwards will be arraigned on Thursday.
