TYRONE, Mo. (AP) — Although authorities still aren’t offering a motive for the shooting deaths of seven people in Missouri overnight, by a man who then took his own life, they’re suggesting that he may have become unhinged by the death of his mother.

County Coroner Tom Whittaker told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that before the gunman was discovered dead, authorities found his mother dead of apparent natural causes on a couch at her home.

He’s speculating that the gunman came home to find his mother dead, “and then for whatever reason went on a rampage and started killing people.”

The victims, along with an eighth person who was wounded, were found last night and early today in four separate homes in the town of Tyrone, about 40 miles north of the Arkansas line.

Authorities say the 36-year-old gunman was discovered in a vehicle in a neighboring county, dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

They’re not yet discussing any connection between the gunman and the victims.
