SALEM, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A Salem woman is distraught after having to put down her 9-year-old cat after someone shot it in the back leg.

Desiree Russell said she came home on Feb. 19 and found her cat, Jett, injured. Russell said the veterinarian initially thought Jett broke her back leg when she got stuck in something.

But X-rays revealed Jett was shot. The vet’s written assessment said: “Metallic fragments present in the corresponding soft tissues. Wound is consistent with a high-impact ballistic(gunshot wound).”

“It doesn’t add up. Who’s going to shoot a cat in this neighborhood? It doesnt make any sense at all,” Russell told KOIN 6 News. “I’m still kind of in shock over it. I just can’t believe that somebody would shoot my cute little cat.”

Her choices were to either amputate the leg or have multiple surgeries to try and get the bullet fragment and bone fragment out. In the end, Russell decided to put Jett down.

Rusell filed a police report, and the investigation is ongoing.
