FOREST GROVE, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A man has been taken into custody after allegedly entering an elementary school classroom and picking up a child, Forest Grove Police said.

Joshua Alan Brown, 29, had no known connection to the 7-year-old third grader at Joseph Gale Elementary School, police said.

The incident happened right after students were released from school for the day. Many parents were inside and outside the building as they picked up their children. The suspect entered a classroom where a few students remained, picked up the child and released him after staff intervened.

Brown was arrested after school staff chased him down through the surrounding neighborhood and into a backyard. A school janitor called 911 and updated the dispatcher on the man’s location.

Forest Grove Police said the suspect appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

The student, a 7-year-old third grader, was not harmed in the incident. No other students or staff members were injured. Police said Brown has no known connection to any student or staff member at Joseph Gale.

Brown, who has an extensive criminal history, will be charged with second degree kidnapping, first degree burglary, second degree criminal mischief, four counts of criminal trespassing and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle and harassment.

Detectives are working to determine the motive behind Brown’s actions at the school.
