PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Local bagel shop Bowery Bagels was as busy as ever Tuesday, though they must’ve expected it.

The Portland business once again made a limited number of paczkis, the Polish treat commonly associated with Fat Tuesday, for the first 400 visitors to its Old Town shop.

Having sold the paczkis last year, Bowery Bagels said leading up to Tuesday that the store would likely “be a madhouse.” They were right.

Customers clamoring for a special once-a-year pastry waited in the morning chill prior to Bowery’s 7 a.m. opening. Save for those set aside for those forward-thinking pre-orderers, Bowery sold their last paczki around 11 a.m. In all, Bowery says they sold about 1,500 “of the little beauties.”

A Bowery Bagel employee estimated around 20 people were streaming in and out the store at any given time.

EXTRA: How do I make a paczki?

The bagel business opted to fill them with apple, vanilla cream, chocolate cream or prune. A vegan option made by Trillium Treats was also available.
