WASHOUGAL, Wash. (KOIN 6) – A 62-year-old woman died after her home caught fire in Washougal early Wednesday morning.
Marlene Dorego died when fire swept through her house in the 2200 block of North Fork Road just after midnight, authorities said.
Skamania County Undersheriff Dave Cox said the fire was first reported as a residential smoke alarm from the home’s alarm company. Shortly after midnight, and the first report, the next door neighbor called 911 and reported that the entire house was fully involved in flames, Cox said, adding firefighters knocked down the flames but the structure partially collapsed.
Jay Martin, who serves as the woman’s caretaker, was able to get out, Cox said. Authorities said Martin was woken up by the smoke alarm around midnight, and said that he last saw the missing woman inside the residence. The caretaker tried to go back inside the residence to save the woman, but it was too hot, Cox said.
Dorego and Martin were the only people inside the home at the time.
A preliminary cause has not been released and an autopsy will be conducted.
