NEW YORK (KOIN 6) — Hillsboro-based stop motion company Laika received a welcome nod from the Hollywood Foreign Press Thursday morning, receiving a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Film.

“The Boxtrolls” was nominated alongside “Big Hero 6,” “The Book of Life,” “How To Train Your Dragon 2” and “The Lego Movie.”

The 3D animated movie follows a young boy, Egg, raised by lovable misfit boxtrolls as he tries to save them from an exterminator.

“The Boxtrolls” isn’t Laika’s first major film: The animators created “Coraline” in 2009, which debuted at the Portland International Film Festival and also received a Golden Globe nomination.

The 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented Jan. 11 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host for the third consecutive year.
