PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Nine months after Mayor Charlie Hales announced Airbnb would move its headquarters to Portland, the online subletting company opened its new space.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is in Portland for the opening and made remarks about their commitment to the city and announced a community service project.
Their new headquarters is in the Blagen Block Building, 34 NW 1st Ave, about 50 yards from the Skidmore Fountain MAX stop.
Since Hales’ announcement in March, Airbnb changed its logo (to mixed reactions), announced a partnership with the cities of Portland and San Francisco to help before and after disasters, and got legal approval from Portland to sublet spots in the city.
Airbnb said they have about 1600 hosts in the Portland area, but less than 100 have applied for permits.
Portland city code had to be changed so homes in residential areas could operate commercially as hosts of Airbnb.
Early estimates said about 160 people will work at the Airbnb headquarters in Portland.
