VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN 6) – The man charged with felony hit and run and vehicular homicide is being held on $500,000 bail after making his first court appearance.
Matthew S. Purifoy, 33, did not enter a plea during Tuesday’s brief appearance. He is expected to enter a plea on Dec. 19 at 1:30 p.m. when he is arraigned.
Vancouver police accuse Purifoy of driving recklessly Monday morning. Spokesperson Kim Kapp said police later learned several people called 911 to report Purifoy’s vehicle hit another vehicle on Interstate 205 near State Route 500 and refused to stop.
Investigators said Purifoy then crashed into 57-year-old Anita Walters in the area of Northeast Vancouver Mall Drive and Northeast Andresen Road. She died on scene, police said. Purifoy’s vehicle was found north of the second crash scene.
Prosecutors in court Tuesday said they were unable to verify Purifoy’s address and asked for bail to be set at $500,000.
Records show that he has been convicted in Oregon for several moving violations. He also has a conviction for identity theft.
Police believe Monday’s crash involving Purifoy involved some sort of impairment.
