Astoria homeowner holds burglar at gunpoint

ASTORIA, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Two people are in jail and two children were taken to a grandparent after a homeowner held one of them at gunpoint during a burglary.

Joseph Lee Cozart and Tamara Denise Painter were arrested by the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday afternoon.

Cozart, 34, was allegedly leaving a house in the Miles Crossing area when the homeowner returned home and saw him leaving with a box full of items. Painter was in a car in the driveway and left when the homeowner came back.

The homeowner held Cozart at gunpoint until deputies arrived.

A few minutes later, an Oregon State Police trooper saw Painter’s vehicle in the area and pulled her over. Two children, aged 2 and 3, were with her in the car.

Authorities said they found many items taken from the house during their investigation.

Painter, 29, faces two counts of reckless endangerment, theft, criminal trespass, conspiracy, burglary, possession of meth, tampering with evidence, having an open container and driving with a suspended license.

Cozart also faces two counts of reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, theft, conspiracy, burglary and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
