SALEM, Ore. (KOIN 6) — The driver of a commercial truck has been arrested following a hit-and-run in Salem Friday afternoon.
Salem Police Department said in a statement the crash, at 25th St. SE and Matrona Ave. SE resulted in two drivers being pulled by emergency responders from their vehicles.
Traffic on 25th St. SE’s southbound lanes was detoured at McGilchrist Ave. SE in Salem for hours Friday night due to a multi-vehicle crash.
Just before 6:00 p.m., a commercial truck driven by Jesus Manuel Alvarez, 33, drifted to the far north lane on 25th St. SE at Madrona Ave. SE and lost control, leaving the roadway towards a grassy area.
Salem police said Alvarez over-corrected, and as a result drove into the two oncoming (southbound) lanes, directly into the path of two oncoming vehicles.
Two southbound drivers struck Alvarez’s broadside vehicle: Chase Wells-Gonzalez, 22, and Gary Quintana, 49, of Keizer.
Both were treated at Salem Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, after police said Alvarez fled the crash scene.
He was located nearby, police said, and was arrested on charges of driving while suspended, felony hit and run, and two counts of assault.
Alvarez is lodged in the Marion County Jail.
