VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN 6) – A man who officials say started an apartment fire and pointed a gun at a stranger was shot and killed by police.
The 31-year-old man was a guest at the apartment, officials said, and refused to put down what appeared to be an AR-15 style gun when police shot him. He died at the scene.
Authorities later said the weapon was an Airsoft replica of an AR-15.
The situation began around 11 p.m. Tuesday when police and firefighters were called to the Alder Creek Apartments in Vancouver. Witnesses told KOIN 6 News the man set the fire and left the building armed with a gun.
Witnesses said the armed man walked into the complex parking lot and lifted the gun toward a bystander.
Firefighters, unable to properly fight the growing apartment flames until police secured the area, knocked down the fire within a few short minutes. The complex, however, had become fully engulfed, leaving a family of two adults and two children displaced.
The American Red Cross was activated to help the family housing and clothing needs.
No one was injured in the fire, police officials said.
Police have not released the names of anyone involved. A spokesperson said detectives from the Regional Major Crimes Team and Arson Team are investigating.
