MARION COUNTY, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Two people died after a head-on collision that set one car on fire in Marion County Thursday morning.
The crash, just after 7 a.m., happened near the intersection of Lebrun Road and French Prairie Road, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.
Passersby tried to put the fire out, but the vehicle burned until emergency responders arrived and extinguished it.
Authorities later identified the victims as 45-year-old Leora Casey of Sherwood and 19-year-old Kyle Sanders of Gresham. Police said Saturday, Nov. 8 was going to be Sanders’ 20th birthday.
An investigation into the accident revealed that the crash occurred as Casey was driving south on French Prairie and attempted to pass a vehicle, in a passing zone, traveling south in front of her. During that time, police said Casey wasn’t able to get back into her lane in time and her vehicle collided with Sander’s vehicle as he was traveling in his northbound, oncoming, lane.
The impact caused Casey’s vehicle to catch fire and slide off the roadway. Neither driver had any passengers in their vehicle.
The investigation was conducted by members of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Traffic Safety Team and Sgt. David Leday of the Keizer Police Department. Woodburn Fire District also responded to assist.
