SEATTLE, Wash. (KOIN 6) — A North Bend couple guilty of allowing a disabled teen to go malnourished, unwashed, and suffer from rotting teeth will not serve jail time, Seattle PI reports.

April and Jeffrey Henderson were paid $4,100 per month by the state of Washington to care of the blind, then-19-year-old, who had cerebral palsy.

Investigators found the teen in October 2012 filthy, naked except for a diaper, weighing 67 pounds.

Seattle PI reports April and Jeffrey Henderson pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal mistreatment in September, and Friday were sentenced to nine months of house arrest with electronic monitoring.

Investigators who arrived at the Henderson’s home Oct. 25, 2012 described the girl as “skeletal.”

“The only way to describe her moaning was that of a wounded animal,” the Detective Belinda Paredes-Garrett  said in charging papers. Senior Deputy Prosecutor Amanda Froh described the abuse as “horrific,” and nearly fatal, Seattle PI reports.

In the home were laptops, iPads, iPhones, a television and a large number of reptiles, Seattle PI reports.

The teen, since removed from the home, has gained thirty pounds, undergone 19 root canals, and had four teeth pulled.

Her condition has improved in the care of a court-appointed guardian, and she has enrolled in a Washington high school, Seattle PI reports.
