PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A man in his mid-20s suffered broken bones but is expected to recover after being hit by a school bus in Northeast Portland.

The crash at the intersection of NE 162nd and Sandy Boulevard happened around 7 a.m., when it was still dark and rainy, police said.

Witnesses told police the pedestrian, a homeless man, was in the crosswalk when he was hit. He did a full rotation in the wheel well of the bus and was carried about 40 feet before the driver stopped. The driver was not aware of what happened until witnesses stopped the bus, police said.

The driver for the Reynolds School District stayed at the scene and cooperated with police and was later cited.

No children were on the bus at the time of the incident.
