PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — About a week after his Republican opponent Monica Wehby challenged him to a string of different debates, Sen. Jeff Merkley officially declined.

Merkley’s office informed KOIN 6 News — one of the debates sites proposed by Wehby — late Tuesday afternoon.

He also declined Wehby’s offer to debate at Oregon Public Broadcasting.

The rivals for the US Senate seat will debate Oct. 14 at KOBI in southern Oregon.

Wehby challenged Merkley to three future debates days after she opted to cancel an Oct. 23 debate held by KGW and the Oregonian. The next day, Wehby never showed up to an interview with Willamette Week involving Merkley and two other candidates.

A new poll puts Merkley up by 13 points, 52-39. The election is November 4.
