PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — There was lots of laughter at the Tiffany Center in Portland Wednesday night, as Author Anne Lamott kicked off the Voices Lectures to a packed house.

Lamott writes about faith, family and what it means to be human. Her new book, “Small Victories: Spotting Improbably Moments of Grace,” is coming out in November.

“I just hope to get people thinking about how short, precious and amazing this one life they have is and to get serious about it…in the sense of becoming more playful, making more mistakes and giving more,” Lamott told KOIN 6 before the lecture.

Lamott said she loves to make people laugh and that’s exactly what she did Wednesday evening.

KOIN 6 news anchor Anne State introduced Lamott who began her lecture with a story about how she broke her toe.  The short story?  She dropped a 60 pound box of tile on her foot.  The long story?  She ended up going to the emergency room where she met a doctor whose daughter was dealing with addiction.

Lamott went on to tell the audience that she keeps her prayers simple:  “help, thanks and wow.”  No matter how difficult life gets, Lamott said, “we will come through 100% of the time.”

Lamott is the first of four female speakers. In the coming months, Voices will feature Piper Kerman, Temple Grandin and Angelique Kidjo.

Francine Read started the lecture series in 1993 when she was a dental hygienist. She told KOIN 6 it’s grown so popular that they’ve had to turn people away.

KOIN 6 is a proud sponsor of Voices Lectures 2014-2015.
