PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — More than 3,000 people came together across state lines Sunday to celebrate the courage it takes to battle drug and alcohol addiction.

Participants of Hands Across the Bridge — many of whom have reclaimed their lives from addiction — joined hands on the Interstate Bridge joining Oregon and Washington in honor of National Recovery Month.

The event began twelve years ago when two women, Patty Katz and Louise Wedge, stood on the bridge to mark their return to sobriety.

The event has grown significantly over the years: on that day in 2002, only 200 people joined them.
