PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Police say a 30-year-old man is responsible for selling stolen meat and frozen shrimp from local Safeway stores.
Joseph Brasky remains in the Multnomah County Detention Center. He was arrested last week on two counts of first-degree theft and one count of second-degree criminal trespass.
According to court documents, Safeway Loss Prevention opened an investigation after discovering more than 21 thefts between August 2013 and September 2014.
The total value of merchandise stolen is estimated at more than $3,000, court documents state.
All of the thefts happened at Safeway stores throughout Multnomah County, police said.
On Sept. 4, officers with Safeway followed Brasky out of the store after he was recorded taking meat, frozen shrimp and other items from the store without paying, court documents state.
Detectives at North Precinct interviewed Brasky where he was shown 21 photos from the various thefts in 2013 and 2014. Brasky admitted that he was the person in all of the photos, according to the documents.
Brasky told detectives he sold some of the stolen frozen shrimp and meat, the documents state. He also admitted to just giving it away and using it for his own meals, police said.
Brasky told police that he had been struggling for several years because of heroin addiction.
He is expected back in court later next year.
