SALEM, Ore. (KOIN 6) — An 18-year old from Beaverton was arrested Wednesday in connection with a shooting in the parking lot of a PetSmart in Salem.
Jose Antonio Lopez-Avalos was taken into custody and booking into the Marion County Correctional Facility charged with attempted murder, assault in the second degree and unlawful use of a weapon.
An investigation into the shooting that took place on Monday revealed that 25-year-old Erik Coronel of Woodburn was driving through the parking lot of the PetSmart at 2925 Lancaster Dr. NE when he encountered two young Hispanic men and one young Hispanic woman.
Police said the Hispanic men were making gang gestures and exchanged words with Coronel.
As Coronel was driving away, one of the men, later identified as Lopez-Avalos, pulled a pistol out of his waistband and began firing at Coronel.
Coronel sustained non-life threatening gunshot wounds and began driving himself to the hospital.
While on the way to a hospital, authorities said Coronel’s passenger called 911, and they were instructed and agreed to meet medics and police. Medics then transported Coronel to Salem Hospital, while officers searched the area of the shooting for the suspect.
Salem Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Section and Gang Enforcement Team conducted a joint investigation that led them to Lopez-Avalos and the identification of the other juveniles with him at the time of the shooting.
