TUALATIN, Ore. (KOIN 6) — The Portland area’s first Cabela’s outdoor store is set to open in Tualatin on Sept. 18.
The hunting and fishing superstore will sit just off Interstate 5 at the Nyberg Road exit opposite of the Fred Meyer store on Tualatin Sherwood Road.
More than a million people are expected to shop at the store in September, bringing a big boost to Tualatin’s economy.
The Nebraska-based outdoor gear store hired close to 200 people for the new site.
Dawn Laughlin, who lives, nearby, said it’s a dream job to work in a place she would shop anyway.
“It is a big deal. It will help the economy greatly,” she said. “It’s going to bring a lot of money into this town.”
While outdoor enthusiasts are expected to come to the opening, anyone is welcome.
“You can learn how to tie a fly for fly-fishing. You can learn how to pick out the right tent for camping. You can learn about technical aspects of clothing,” said employee Shannon Jidas
Store leaders said they even expect to draw thousands of customers from other states.
“Before this one opened, I use to have to drive all the way to Idaho, so it’s going to be the same way because California doesn’t have one. So you’re going to have a lot of people coming up from the south,” said Chadd McDowell.
Cabela’s has long been a popular online destination for Oregonians until a store near Eugene three years ago.
The new location in the Portland area, which includes a restaurant inside, is sure to become a destination spot.
However, nearby businesses and those who live in Tualatin are worried about the traffic that will come with nearly a million visitors.
To hopefully combat some of those issues, the store has hired off duty police officers to help with opening day on Thursday, Sept. 18 and weekend traffic.
