HOOD RIVER, Ore. (KOIN 6) — One of Mosier’s top firefighters and local artists was killed Sunday riding her bicycle along I-84 west of Hood River.

Ellen Dittebrandt, 52, was named Mosier’s firefighter of the year in 2010. She died on scene after her bicycle was hit from behind by a pickup truck early Sunday morning west of Hood River.

Police said driver fatigue has been identified as a contributing factor in the accident, as the pickup truck, driven by a 55-year-old NW Portland man, drifted onto the right shoulder and struck Dittebrandt’s bike. She flew from the bike and was pronounced dead on scene.

Dittebrandt, who was wearing a helmet, was headed west along I-84 near the offramp to Viento State Park around 6:20 a.m. when the accident happened, Oregon State Police said.

The driver was not hurt and is cooperating, authorities said.

The investigation continues.
