PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Long-time KOIN 6 News anchor Jeff Gianola completed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Friday after Sport Director Dan Christoperson nominated him.
Gianola got a little help from KOIN 6’s co-anchor Anne State in completing the ALS fundraiser outside the KOIN Tower. Gianola challenges others to learn more about the disease and donate to the cause in their own way.
According to the ALS Association, the effort has raised $53.3 million so far since July 29.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, after it struck the New York Yankees first baseman), is a debilitating disease that causes nerve cells to deteriorate and die.
With unknown causes, people with ALS usually die within 2-5 years of a diagnosis.
