MARTHA’S VINEYARD, Mass. (KOIN 6) — The United States will be “vigilant and relentless” in eliminating the Islamic militant group that claimed responsibility for beheading captive American journalist James Foley Tuesday.

In a statement Wednesay, U.S. President Barack Obama made a statement on Foley’s death, and the outlook of the American campaign in Iraq. Another journalist, Steven Sotloff, remains in captivity and his life is also under threat.

Obama called Foley’s beheading “an act of violence that shocks the conscience of the entire world.” He vowed to continue fighting the Islamic militant group, and to continue to assist Iraqi and Kurdish forces in Iraq. ISIS said the death is in retaliation for American airstrikes in Iraq.

“We will continue to confront this hateful terrorism,” the president said.

He said ISIS has declared their ambition to enact genocide, and pointed out their history of kidnapping and rape. Furthermore, Obama said the group’s ideology is bankrupt.

“No faith teaches people to massacre innocents,” he said.

Foley was taken hostage two years ago while reporting on the conflict in Syria.
