MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A man died on Tuesday after the bicycle he was riding along Highway 47 about two miles north of McMinnville was hit by a van, Oregon State Police (OSP) said.

Preliminary information indicated around 5 p.m., Juan Huapeo Garcia of Carlton was riding a bicycle along the paved northbound shoulder of Highway 47 near milepost 41. A 1999 Chevrolet van driven by another man was traveling northbound at the same time when it struck the bicycle from behind.

Garcia, 56, was ejected from the bike and pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.

The van’s driver, a 45-year-old Carlton man, was not injured and is cooperating, investigators said. He has not yet been charged with anything, and the investigation by OSP continues.

Authorities said they are keeping the Yamhill County District Attorney’s office updated on the investigation. However, no enforcement decisions have been made at this time.
