SANDY, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A fiery single-car crash north of Sandy early Monday morning took the lives of all four people inside — including two twenty-year-olds.

The driver, Brandon Lee Mayo, 31, as well as three passengers including Suzanne Varsamas, 39,  and twenty-year-old Shalene Rene Newland and Jesse Jasso-Varsamas, all of Portland, were killed.

Just before 2:30 a.m., neighboring residents heard a “a big bang” near SE Lusted and Hudson Road. One of the neighbors, Duane Mickelson, said he initially thought a power line had fallen down and came outside to find a flaming car smashed into a tree.

Acting swiftly, Mickelson noticed multiple people were still in the vehicle and, while calling 911, pulled one of the victims from the wreckage before the car became fully engulfed.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the driver and two passengers dead inside the vehicle. The passenger pulled from the car, who Mickelson said was a child, died in the hospital.

Mickelson said two dogs were also in the car and managed to escape the fire. One of the dogs was found alive and transported to a local veterinary hospital.

Todd Jones, another neighbor, said crashes in the dimly lit stretch have happened before.

The intersection of SE Lusted and Hudson Road was closed during an investigation of the scene. It was reopened around 7:30 a.m.
