THE DALLES, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Nearly a week into battling an active Columbia River Gorge wildfire that’s threatened 750 homes at its worst, evidence of firefighters’ hard work continued Monday.
Firefighting officials announced the Rowena Fire, which began near the community of Rowena and surged toward The Dalles, is at 68% containment.
The wind-fueled wildfire has burned through 3,680 acres and has cost close to $3.7 million, according to command post officials, though residents forced to evacuate their homes were allowed to return over the weekend.
Highway 30, closed near the path of the fire for much of the week, was completely reopened Monday evening. All evacuation levels were also lifted, according to @RowenaFire2014.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
