BORING, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A family managed to escape from two people armed with semi-automatic handguns who tried to rob them while they thought they were buying a car advertised on Craigslist.

The incident happened around 10:40 p.m. Thursday in front of an abandoned house at 27910 SE Dee Street in Boring, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

That afternoon, the man found a car on Craigslist he wanted. He talked by phone with the seller and agreed to meet at a gas station in Boring after the seller said he got off work, authorities said.

The buyer said he’d bring the money in cash.

When he and his family got to the gas station around 10:30 p.m. the seller called and said to meet him at his nearby home — which turned out to be the abandoned house.

As soon as they arrived, two men armed with semi-automatic handguns confronted them, authorities said. One robber pressed the gun against the man’s forehead and demanded money and tried to pull him out of the driver’s window. The other man tried to open the driver’s door.

But the family was able to drive away without giving up the money or getting hurt. They immediately called 911.

Deputies checked and found the vehicle listed in the Craigslist ad — with the Oregon plate VBW-632 — is registered to a car reported stolen in Clackamas County.

The man who wanted to buy the car did not know the car was stolen.

No real description of the would-be robbers is available.

The investigation continues, and anyone with information — or who experienced a similar situation – is asked to call 503.723.4949.
