PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — One young man drowned at Sellwood Park late Friday afternoon.
Just after 5:30 p.m. Friday, officials responded to the East bank of the Willamette River on reports an 18-year-old man was having trouble swimming to shore. Mario Antonio Martinez Villalta was not a strong swimmer and was not wearing a life jacket, Portland Fire & Rescue said.
An earlier report said two men had jumped from the Sellwood Bridge, but it became clear he entered the water with another young man from the East Bank of the Willamette River.
Portland Fire & Rescue said the rescue effort moved to a recovery effort for the young man’s body. However, the team was not able to recover Villalta’s body by the time the search concluded around 11 p.m. Friday.
