Young blind golfer aims to inspire Portland kids

Sierra Burgess picked up golf about a year ago and said it changed her life

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Sierra Burgess picked up golf about a year ago and said it changed her life.

This young Oregon golfer is legally blind, but through the Washington School for the Blind she’s learned to work on her swing — and rely on her hearing to guide the ball.

Burgess said she can see enough to judge the direction to hit the ball, then listens for it to drop and roll and adjust her next shot.

She’s working with the First Tee program of Portland to inspire other children.

Sierra Burgess will be featured in a special that airs before the PGA Tour at 10 a.m. Saturday on KOIN 6.
