PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — After a total redesign of two rooms, Powell’s Books re-opened their Burnside entrance Friday morning.

The redesign included their Blue and Green rooms, and the renovation features a new roof, lighting, skylights and many more windows.

“It’s a huge day,” said owner Emily Powell. “Very proud to be here today.”

She said one of the great things about the renovation was discovering hidden things in the old building.

“There’s a Used Car Department sign in our literature room now that you can see,” she said. A “champagne bottle hidden behind a column from the early ’80s” was also discovered during the remodel.

The renovations, she said, “went very smoothly” and were done to keep the store in shape “for the next generation.”

Her favorite new feature is the openness and lighting. “We feel more integrated into our neighborhood.”

The one thing still missing is the iconic Powell’s Books sign out front. That should be back up in a few weeks.
