PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Sandra Acosta Casillas said a new playground in Southeast Portland means the difference between worrying her kids will get hit by a car in the street and that playtime is only funtime.

More than 200 volunteers from Habitat for Humanity, Foresters and KaBoom! built the playground at SE Division and 171st.

The playground, designed in part with drawings from kids, has a slide, monkey bars and a swing set. It will help create healthy relationships that will last beyond their playground years.

“Kids need a place to exercise and they need a place to run around,” said Habitat for Humanity’s Jett Maertz. “This is going to be a great gathering spot for the children as well as the adults.”

The playground officially opens at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
