Driver dies when car leaves I-5, hits tree

WOODBURN, Ore. (KOIN 6) — One person died when a car went off I-5 between Woodburn and Wilsonville, slammed head-on into a tree and burst into flames.

The crash happened just before noon, Oregon State Police said in a release. The driver — the only person in the car — went off the right shoulder near milepost 281, traveled another 200 feet through the grass before hitting the tree.

The interior of the car caught fire, officials said, and the driver died at the scene. Authorities do not know at this time if the driver is a man or a woman.

The investigation into the crash is continuing, and witnesses are asked to contact OSP at 800.452.7888.
