BEND, Ore. (KOIN 6) —An inmate who escaped from a work detail in Deschutes County Sunday evening was captured Monday afternoon.

Around 6:30 Sunday evening, Keith Schmidtke ran through a parking lot and scaled a fence while working on a detail between the Deschutes County Adult Jail and the Work Center, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office officials said early Monday morning.

DCSO deputies and Bend police officers canvassed the surrounding area, including residential stretches near the sheriff’s office property, but were unable to find the man.

Around 12:30 p.m. Monday, Schmidtke was spotted in a backyard in the 61000 block of Duncan Lane. A K9 was used and when he tried to flee, the dog bit him. But he got away for a few blocks until he was caught in the 2000 block of Cumulus.

Schmidtke, 38, was in custody on a 120-day sentence for identity theft, theft, criminal mischief and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle. He has served time in the jail on prior occasions, according to DCSO officials.
