SCAPPOOSE, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A Lake Oswego man was arrested Saturday evening after police said he nearly hit several bicyclists on Highway 30 east of Scappoose.

Authorities said on Saturday at approximately 7:52 p.m., an Oregon State Police (OSP) trooper responded to a disturbance along the highway near Watson Road.

Upon his arrival, the trooper spoke with numerous witnesses who reported seeing a man operating a Ford pickup nearly strike the bicyclists, who were participating in the Group Health STP Seattle to Portland bicycle event, near milepost 18 before stopping along the highway.

The trooper contacted the pickup’s driver who was identified as David J. Easton, 53.

OSP said a subsequent investigation led the trooper to arrest Easton for driving under the influence of intoxicants and recklessly endangering another person.

He was taken to Columbia County Jail.
