CLACKAMAS COUNTY, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A falling tree killed a person at a campground in Clackamas County Thursday afternoon.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a man in his 60s was killed after he was hit by a tree around 1:30 p.m. at Ripplebrook Campground, which is southeast of Estacada, in the Mount Hood National Forest.
Police said the Estacada man was with a group of campers who were out cutting wood. They were improperly felling a large Douglas Fir tree that was dead and leaning over.
The campers were using a chain saw and a chain attached to a truck that was then hooked to the tree to bring down the 130 to 150 foot tree, police said.
When the tree fell, the top rotten section of the tree broke off and fell separately from the main tree, hitting the man and fatally injuring him.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office and the Clackamas County Medical Examiners Office responded to the scene to investigate the incident.
The name of the man was not being released, pending family notification.
